Manchester United 3-1 Burnley: Smalling double sees Red Devils boost top-four hopes

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling came off the bench to score two goals, as the Red Devils earned all three points in a difficult clash against Burnley, reports BBC Sport.

Smalling was forced to come on early into the game following injury to Phil Jones, and he made an instant impact. The England defender scored from a corner to put United into the lead almost immediately after coming on.

But Burnley weren’t to be denied so easily. The Clarets were full of confidence, and minutes later conjured up a brilliant equaliser. Danny Ings produced a diving header from close range to level the game early on.

Smalling popped up again with a header in first-half injury time to send Burnley into the break a goal down.

They failed to recover on the second occasion, and game themselves a mountain to climb after giving away a penalty late in the second-half. Robin Van Persie made no mistake from the spot and Manchester United took all three points at Old Trafford.
