Newcastle midfielder Tiote could miss rest of season

Newcastle United are fearful that midfielder Cheick Tiote could miss the rest of the season after picking up an injury while on international duty, the Daily Star is reporting.

The 28-year-old is currently having the knee problem assessed and Newcastle will learn the prognosis in the next the 24 hours, but there are concerns that it could be more serious than initially expected.

He suffered the injury during the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, and was therefore forced to miss the penalty shootout that decided the competition, with his Ivory Coast side overcoming Ghana 9-8 on spot-kicks for their second title.

Tiote has struggled with injuries throughout this season, missing the first month with a hamstring problem. As a result, he has made just 12 appearances in all competitions and become a less prominent member of the Magpies midfield than at any other time over the course of his four and-a-half year stay.

Should Tiote indeed be ruled out for the remainder of campaign, it would represent another huge blow to Newcastle, especially after Siem De Jong’s recovery was delayed by two months due to a collapsed lung.
