The 28-year-old is currently having the knee problem assessed and Newcastle will learn the prognosis in the next the 24 hours, but there are concerns that it could be more serious than initially expected.
He suffered the injury during the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, and was therefore forced to miss the penalty shootout that decided the competition, with his Ivory Coast side overcoming Ghana 9-8 on spot-kicks for their second title.
Tiote has struggled with injuries throughout this season, missing the first month with a hamstring problem.
