Barcelona forward Neymar has waxed lyrical over Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, with the Daily Telegraph reporting the Brazil international predicting his compatriot could be the best player in the Premier League.
Neymar, who made the comments in an article on the official Liverpool website, praised Coutinho’s ability and predicted big things for the former Inter playmaker and both club and country level.
“He can be the star player in England,” Neymar said of the player he came across in youth football. “This season I think everybody in England is seeing how talented he is – and I know he has a lot more to show.
“When he has the ball at his feet, he can make things happen for himself and he can make things happen for other players. He is a very special player,” he continued. “He will play a big part in the future of the national team. The national steam is very strong, but the way he is playing for Liverpool, I’m sure he will be a big part of Brazil going forward.”
Coutinho has played 32 times for the Reds this season, scoring three goals, including a late winner in the Reds’ last outing, the FA Cup replay win over Championship side Bolton Wanders. Eidur Gudjohnsen put the Trotters in front with a penalty on the hour mark before Raheem Sterling equalised with four minutes to go and Coutinho decided the match.
The 22-year-old Coutinho, who began his career at Vasco da Gama before a move to Italy, has also represented Espanyol, spending time on loan at the Catalan club in 2012. He has five caps for Brazil, making his debut in 2010.
