Sunderland winger Adam Johnson will be an absentee for the Black Cats’ FA Cup fourth round replay against Fulham as he’s undergoing an operation on his thumb and can’t risk infection, reports ITV Football.
The England international said he cannot risk infection, which is the reason for his absence, but wished the side good luck against Fulham, and is expected to return for the weekend. This season, Adam Johnson has impressed for Gus Poyet’s men, providing moments of brilliance in tight affairs, but he’s also been guilty of inconsistency.
Nevertheless, the former Middlesbrough and Manchester City remains a key player in the Sunderland set-up. He’s waiting for the wound to heal on his thumb before he can return to action. Sunderland have been suffering from a lack of goals this season, so Johnson can often be the difference, and he said the bet time for the operation was now, with a run of important games to come that he doesn’t want to miss.
