Van Gaal backs Man Utd youngster Blackett for success

Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United youngster Tyler Blackett can reach the very top of the game after the defender signed a new contract, tying him to the Premier League club until 2017, ESPN has reported.

Blackett was promoted to the first team at the start of the season by van Gaal and has gone on to make 10 appearances for United, most recently in the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford by Southampton in mid-January.

The two-and-a-half year contract is the latest awarded to the crop of fresh faces at United, with Jesse Lingard, Paddy McNair and Reece James all also putting pen-to-paper in recent weeks. Blackett has spoken of his delight at confirming his future lies with United, while van Gaal has spoken highly of the 20-year-old.

“I am delighted Tyler has signed a new contract,” the manager said. “Tyler has great potential and I believe he is at the right club to continue his development.” Blackett added that as a United fan, signing the new contract carried special resonance. “I’m thrilled,” he admitted. “I have supported United all my life and have been here since I was eight. To make my debut was a dream come true.”

Blackett has spent time on loan at Championship clubs Birmingham City and Blackpool, both spells coming last season, and was part of United’s tour of the United States, which is where it is believed he caught the eye of his veteran boss.
