Alderweireld looking to stay at Southampton

Toby Alderweireld has revealed that he would like to remain at Southampton beyond his current loan spell, which expires at the end of this season, has reported.

The Belgium international, who played at right-back as he helped his country reach the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup, was brought to the South coast late in the summer transfer window on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid, where he had fallen down the pecking order.

He impressed both in central defence and in an unfamiliar defensive midfield position before sustaining an injury in January. He is in contention for a return in Sunday’s trip to Chelsea and will look to add to his 18 appearances so far for the Saints, who are still in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

The 26-year-old’s form has seen him linked with other clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City. There is an option for Southampton to sign Alderweireld permanently for £6m in the summer, but Atletico can cancel that by paying £1.5m and then selling to the highest bidder.

He is keen to stay at the St. Mary’s Stadium, however. “If I could choose then of course I would like to stay here,” he said. ‘It’s not up to me. Atletico could decide that they want me back. I have two years left there so it is difficult for me to answer the question.

“I’m enjoying the Premier League, I’m enjoying playing for Southampton – I love the club and I love the supporters. We’ll see, I am enjoying it here and my mind and focus is on Southampton.”
