After Manchester City were somewhat comfortable beaten over two legs in the Champions League last-16, Sky
Barcelona were the deserved winners in both games, as City took too long before starting to impose themselves against the Spaniards. At the Nou Camp, Luis Enrique’s side created a host of opportunities, and should have won be a bigger margin, but were consistently stopped by Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Lionel Messi put in a brilliant display in the Barcelona attack, and tore the City defence apart on many occasions in the 90 minutes. He was often left unmarked by the Sky Blues midfielders, which proved to be a dangerous idea, as the Argentine ran rings around his opposition, while creating the only goal of the game as a result.
And Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool player, believes it’s now time for manager Manuel Pellegrini to make big changes to the side to achieve their lofty European aspirations, with many players in the squad failing to pull their weight in the important ties.
“It has been a very good squad over the last four years, winning two titles and maybe coming second twice as well, but not in Europe. I think it is now time for changes at City as I do not see them getting any better. They need to get some young players in with energy and pace,” he said.
