Chelsea lining up move for Real Madrid’s Varane

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could be set to return to his old club, Real Madrid, to move for France international centre-back Raphael Varane, the Daily Telegraph has reported, after the defensive frailties of the Premier League leaders were laid bare by their Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blues bowed out of Europe in midweek after a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge against the Ligue 1 champions, both goals conceded from corners, with ex-Chelsea defender David Luiz getting the first and his Brazil international teammate Thiago Silva scoring the second

It’s claimed that Mourinho wants his defence to show they can do better between now and the end of the season but is considering summer transfer regardless and, should Varane be prised away from the Santiago Bernabeu, it is Gary Cahill whose future would most be under threat.

The England international, who moved to the Bridge from Bolton Wanderers in January 2012, has made more than 100 appearances for the club was, with captain John Terry, considered to be at fault for Silva’s decisive goal.

Mourinho has analysed how Chelsea were beaten on away goals by PSG and also looked at the goal conceded in the first leg in Paris, for which he pointed the finger at Cahill, who had opened the scoring in the return bout with a late goal of his own. Other players and other areas of the team also came under fire from the boss, the Telegraph add.

The Portuguese worked with Varane at Madrid, blooding the former Lens player into the senior team, and Varane has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for Los Blancos. He is also a regular in the France side, appearing in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and captained Les Bleus in a November friendly against Sweden.
