Chelsea offer new contract to Ivanovic

Chelsea are set to secure 31-year-old defender Branislav Ivanovic for next season after offering him a new one-year contract worth £90,000 per week, according to the Daily Express.

The offer is in keeping with the Chelsea club policy of only handing one-year deals to players aged over 30, with captain John Terry set to extend his Stamford Bridge stay by another 12 months in the coming weeks. Ivanovic wants to stay at Chelsea, and will handle all negotiations himself as he does not have an agent.

The Serb has been in fine form of late, scoring four key goals in the space of six games and helping the Blues lift the Capital One Cup with a 2-0 victory over rivals Tottenham on March 1. He has been one of their most consistent performers this season as the club lie five points clear at the top of the Premier League with the highest number of clean sheets.

Ivanovic moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2008 from Lokomotiv Moscow for £9m, and it took him several months to establish himself in the first-team, but he has since gone on to play a major role in a number of successes, scoring the winning goal in the 2013 Europa League final against Benfica as well as helping to win the Premier League, Champions League and two FA Cups.
