Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has offered his support to Angel Di Maria as the former Real Madrid midfielder battles through a slump in form, BBC
Di Maria moved to Old Trafford from the Santiago Bernabeu late in the summer transfer window, Louis van Gaal paying just under £60m to sign the Argentina international. Di Maria, part of the Argentina squad who reached the World Cup final, although injury ruled him out the defeat to Germany, has suffered a dip in performance after a strong start to his United career, it’s felt.
United beat Sunderland 2-0 on Saturday but Di Maria was withdrawn at half-time in favour of Adnan Januzaj and has been criticised for his recent displays, while off-field problems are also thought to be a contributory factor. But Rooney, who scored both goals against the Black Cats, the opener from the penalty spot and a late second from Januzaj’s assist, has come out in support of his teammate.
“He’s a great player. You don’t lose your talent overnight. I think he will figure it out,” the skipper said. “Hopefully he’ll get back to his best and start giving some great performances.
“You have to come to it in your own way and I am sure he will be a big player for us between now and the end of the season,” Rooney added.
