Everton vs Newcastle – Premier League preview and team news

Everton will be hoping to move further clear of danger when they host a Newcastle United side that sits comfortably in mid-table despite their recent inconsistency.

After a sluggish start that resulted in pressure from the stands, the Toffees fought back superbly to claim a richly deserved victory in the first leg of their Europa League tie with Dynamo Kiev, but too often this season they have followed up good displays in Europe with poor domestic results.

Manager Roberto Martinez is still under immense pressure to guide them away from the threat of relegation, and will urge a much better performance than in their last Premier League outing at Stoke City. At least Romelu Lukaku seems to be finding form, proving too strong and imposing a presence for the Ukrainian leaders.

After holding firm for so long against Manchester United and having claims for what looked a clear penalty waved away, it was hugely disappointing for Newcastle to concede what was a farcical late goal to condemn them to defeat, as goalkeeper Tim Krul blotted an otherwise fine performance by setting up Ashley Young.

To have any chance of being handed the job on a full-time basis, John Carver must begin to earn positive results on a more consistent basis, and his job has not been made easier by a lengthy ban for top scorer Papiss Cisse after his involvement in the high-profile spitting incident with Jonathan Evans.

Gareth Barry is out suspended for Everton, who will assess Leighton Baines and Leon Osman, while John Stones is doubtful due to illness.

Newcastle are boosted by the return of Remy Cabella, Jack Colback and second-choice goalkeeper Rob Elliot, but are without Massadio Haidara.
