Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho scored a second-half winner against Manchester City, as the Reds continued their resurgence up the Premier League table, while all but ending Manchester City title hopes, reports BBC
The home side deservedly took the lead just after 10 minutes through Jordan Henderson. The talented England midfielder hit a long range curled effort to put Liverpool ahead early in the first-half.
Brendan Rodgers’ men were dominant in the first-half, pressing their opponents into mistakes, but they were pegged back by Manchester City, and striker Edin Dzeko. A well-worked move from the Premier League holders saw the in-form Bosnia-Herzegovina international slot his shot past Simon Mignolet to ensure the two sides were level at the break.
In the second-half, Manchester City took more control of the game and had more possession, but failed to make it count. The Sky Blues were eventually punished too, with man-of-the-match Philippe Coutinho hitting a similar strike to Henderson’s first-half screamer.
Liverpool held on to their 2-1 lead, and recorded an important win in their pursuit for a top-four finish. City, on the other hand, have an even more difficult task to win the title.
