Liverpool to decide on Sturridge’s fitness to face Arsenal

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is to assess the readiness of Daniel Sturridge to face Arsenal this weekend after the England striker was forced out of international duty due to injury, ESPN has reported.

Sturridge suffered a hip injury as the Reds lost at home to Manchester United in their last Premier League outing and had to withdraw from the national team squad to play a Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania and a prestige friendly against Italy in Turin. Sturridge reported to the England camp but after a scan confirmed the extent of his injury, was allowed to recuse himself from the two fixtures.

Liverpool travel to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday and go into the game trailing the Gunners by some six points, with Rodgers’ side in fifth and Arsene Wenger’s third after half-a-dozen consecutive victories. Liverpool were closing in on six-in-a-row themselves, winning five straight before falling to United.

Sturridge’s injury is the latest in a disrupted campaign for the former Chelsea striker. He missed five months of the season with thigh and calf problems, although Liverpool do have better news regarding Raheem Sterling. The 20-year-old has been carrying a toe injury but is expected to train as normal ahead of the trip to Arsenal.
