Liverpool vs Man Utd – Premier League preview and team news

A game between English football’s most notorious rivals could go a long way to deciding who qualifies for the Champions League next season, as Liverpool face Manchester United.

The last time Liverpool tasted defeat in the Premier League was in the reverse fixture in December, with that 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford proving to be something of a watershed moment. They have been truly inspired since, and are putting immense pressure on the sides currently in the top four.

Victory here will leave them in the box seat going into the international break and the final eight games, so maybe Jordan Henderson could be the man of the moment again. His winner at Swansea City was crucial despite an element of fortune surrounding it, as Brendan Rodgers reaped the rewards of a game-changing tactical switch at half-time.

Man Utd know that they will be playing catch-up if they lose this one, coming into it two points above the home side. But they at least arrive on Merseyside with plenty of confidence, following what was unquestionably their best display of the season last time out against Tottenham, smashing three in a devastating first half.

The big difference was how direct they were in their play, always looking forward in a manner which was symbolic of their success under Sir Alex Ferguson. Michael Carrick played a key role in that, and after signing a new contract he will be determined to seize control of the midfield battle here.

Lucas Leiva is unlikely to feature for Liverpool despite returning to training after injury, but Mario Balotelli should be back after illness.

Jonathan Evans is still suspended for Man Utd, but Angel Di Maria is back from a one-match ban. Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw will not be fit enough to start.
