David Luiz has denied accusations he elbowed Chelsea striker Diego Costa during Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League win over the Premier League leaders, ESPN
Luis was accused of lashing out at Costa during the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, a result that sent the Ligue 1 champions through to the competition’s quarter-finals via the away goal rule, with Luiz scoring against his former club on his return to London. Manager Jose Mourinho called for the Brazil international to be sent off when speaking about the game after the final whistle but Luiz has pointed the finger at Costa, claiming he acted in a violent manner.
“Mourinho can say what he wants,” Luiz said. “Maybe he should talk about when Costa gave me an elbow in the diaphragm early on. I didn’t elbow Costa. He’s a very good friend and a fantastic guy. It’s always a battle to play against him and I’m very happy for him.”
PSG went through despite playing most of the second leg with 10 men, after striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was shown a straight red card for a first half challenge on Luiz’s international colleague Oscar. Gary Cahill put Chelsea in front on the night and on aggregate – the first leg in Paris ending in a 1-1 draw – before Luiz equalised and Eden Hazard restored Chelsea’s advantage with an extra time penalty, with Thiago Silva getting the decisive goal.
Luiz thanked Chelsea for his time at the club but stressed his happiness at progressing with PSG, and questioned the Blues’ defending after both he and Silva scored with headers from corners. “Chelsea are normally strong at set-pieces so you do not expect to score against them like that but just because they conceded from corners, it does not mean they are not strong anymore,” he added
“Chelsea are an amazing club, who gave me many things during my time in England. But now I am a Paris player and I am very happy to be here and into the next round of the Champions League. It was amazing, the spirit, the players gave everything. When we lost Ibra we said we had to keep it simple.”
