Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck scored the winning goal to help eliminate his former side, with the Gunners earning a deserved away win at Old Trafford to book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals against Reading or Bradford, reports BBC
Arsenal lined up to frustrate Manchester United last night, with the Londoners affording possession to the Red Devils. Arsene Wenger’s side were cute on the ball, working moves together to drag the United defence out of position, and their patient play paid dividends in the 25th minute.
A fantastic solo run from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain eventually saw left-back Nacho Monreal put through on goal, and the Spanish defender made no mistake with his close range finish. Manchester United, however, fought back only minutes later through Wayne Rooney.
The England international headed home following a whipped cross from the much maligned Angel Di Maria from the right-hand side to level the game inside of half an hour. Rooney’s goal continued his fine scoring run since being reinstated in attack.
After the break, the game lived up, with Danny Welbeck putting Arsenal ahead for the second time in the match, capitalising on a weak backpass by Antonio Valencia to beat United ‘keeper David De Gea to the ball and score into an empty net.
Later on in the second-half, Di Maria was given two yellow cards for diving and grabbing the referee in frustration, before Adnan Januzaj was also booked for diving. The result sees United out of the competition, and likely to end the season trophyless, while Arsenal face Reading or Blackburn in the FA Cup semi-final.
