The ex-England right back, who made 85 appearances for the Three Lions in a 12 year spell, believes that Liverpool are now capable of overtaking United and finishing in a Champions League position at the end of the season.
Liverpool beat title chasing Manchester City 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho and Sky Sports pundit Neville, has changed his mind on Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top four come the end of the season.
Neville said: “For the first time this season I am concerned as to whether Manchester United can fight them off in the scrap for the Champions League places.
“I’ve backed United all season, and I won’t be changing my mind at this stage, but it’s fair to say Liverpool have emerged as more of a threat than I considered a few weeks ago.”
Liverpool are just two points behind their great rivals after United won away at Newcastle United and Liverpool beat Burnley. The two clubs still have to face each other in the league at Anfield on March 22, in a game that could prove vital at the end of the season as the two teams scrap for a lucrative spot in next seasons Champions League.
