Newcastle promise summer transfer investment

Newcastle United are to bolster their squad significantly over the summer with Coach John Carver admitting the club is in dire need of new signings, ESPN has reported.

Carver has revealed that ahead of the weekend’s Premier League game against Arsenal, he has only 13 fit and available senior players from which to choose. Steven Taylor is still recovering from an Achilles injury that ended his season in early January, while Paul Dummett is struggling too and captain Fabricio Coloccini is suspended after a straight red card in the 3-0 defeat against Everton.

Newcastle are also without Papiss Cisse through suspension after the striker was banned for seven games for spitting at Manchester United’s Jonny Evans, and Carver has a number of other fitness problems with which to contend for the visit of the Gunners.

The club decided against making signings in the January transfer window and missed out on a number of targets in summer 2014, with Carver telling a Press conference that the situation can’t be repeated in the upcoming summer window.

“The squad needs to be stronger and they have acknowledged that to me. [Managing director Lee Charnley] and the board have acknowledged that to me, and that’s why I am saying to you now they are going to invest, because they know they have to,” Carver said.

“I am telling you now, because I have been part of it in the last few weeks, there are things in place,” he continued. “That’s from the top, and the fact that I am sitting here talking about this acknowledgement tells me that they have realised. They’ve got to do something about it, and they know that.

“It’s a difficult situation. I’ve spoken to Lee, who has obviously spoken to Mike [Ashley], and they acknowledge the fact that we’re a little bit short at the back and particularly at centre back. There’s a process in place. I’ve been involved in that process for a few weeks now, there’s big meeting in place in the next couple of weeks with Lee Charnley and [chief scout] Graham Carr to talk about the future and to talk about investment.”
