Pochettino proud of Tottenham after win at QPR

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino praised his side after they moved to within three points of the Premier League’s top four with victory at Queens Park Rangers, the London Evening Standard has reported.

The beaten Capital One Cup finalists took the lead on 34 minutes when top scorer Harry Kane beat goalkeeper Robert Green to head Andros Townsend’s free-kick into the net as his side had the better of the first half.

Kane then netted his 26th goal of the season midway through the second half when he ran on to Ryan Mason’s through ball to shoot calmly past Green. That came after Christian Eriksen had twice come close, seeing a shot come back of a post before having an effort cleared off the line by Charlie Austin.

QPR did threaten an unlikely comeback late on after Sandro scored against his former club, but Tottenham held on to move up to sixth place and leave Pochettino proud of the way his side acquitted themselves. He said: “I’m very proud of our performance; we showed big character against a difficult opponent on a difficult stage.

“We showed today the way we play and the character we have. The response has been fantastic from the squad in the big games that have followed. We have to go away and train hard to focus on our next match against Manchester United.”
