Rose deserves England call, believes Pochettino

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes that left-back Danny Rose deserves to be called up by England amid rumours he could be approached by Jamaica, Sky Sports has reported.

The 24-year-old has played 29 times for the England U-21 side, but is yet to earn a senior cap due to the intense competition for the left-back slot, with Leighton Baines, Luke Shaw and Kieran Gibbs all ahead of him in boss Roy Hodgson’s thinking.

He qualifies for Jamaica through his grandfather, and it has been rumoured that the Caribbean nation could look to persuade Rose to pledge his allegiance to them ahead of the Copa America, which takes place in June.

Hodgson names his next England squad on Thursday, for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania and the friendly with Italy in Turin. And Pochettino believes that Rose, who has edged out Ben Davies in recent months to be Tottenham’s first-choice left-back, deserves to at least be among the squad that Hodgson selects.

“So far he has been the best left-back this season,“ he said. “His performances have been great. But they are not my decisions, it’s always Roy Hodgson’s decision.”
