Southampton manager Ronald Koeman admits players have been suffering from lack of confidence

After Southampton scraped a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace, a relieved manager Ronald Koeman admitted the players have been struggling with confidence of late during their poor run of form, reports BBC Sport.

Sadio Mane scored the only goal of the game in the second-half to earn a valuable win for Southampton. They have been struggling for goals in recent weeks, but could now be turning a corner following their victory over Palace. Koeman’s are hoping to finish in the top-four of the Premier League this season, and the recent win put them into 5th with 10 games still to play.

The players certainly believe they can achieve what looked impossible at the start of the season, and finish in a Champions League place, and he recently admitted following Southampton’s 1-0 that his team have been suffering from a lack of confidence. Their poor form has stemmed from a lack of goals, which Koeman feels is down to the mentality of his team.

But he was delighted to finally get back to winning ways, and is hoping they can turn their season around once more to finish in the top-four.

“We needed that three points because you saw today it wasn’t the best game we played this season, we didn’t create big chances, but we tried and we had the luck and the spirit to win the game. It’s a mental question, the players are maybe a bit less confident and you saw that. We need that confidence to play football,” he said.
