Sunderland to hold talks with manager Gus Poyet over immediate future

Sunderland are holding talks with under-fire manager Gus Poyet over the Uruguayan’s future with the club, after the Black Cats suffered a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of fellow relegation-threatened outfit Aston Villa to slip close to the drop zone with only nine league games to play, reports BBC Sport.

The Sunderland boss is expected to meet chief executive Margaret Byrne and a host of other board members to discuss his future at the Stadium of Light, while seeking answers for their poor form in the Premier League of late. The Black Cats have suffered disappointing results in recent weeks, suffering defeat to Bradford City in the FA Cup, and picking up only one league win in 12.

As a result of their poor results, Sunderland are heavily embroiled in a relegation battle once again, and are only one point clear of the drop zone with nine games remaining. Their recent defeat to Aston Villa saw a new low at the club, with supporters’ patience having finally worn off. There’s every chance his meeting with the board could lead to a sacking, as Sunderland’s Premier League status is at genuine risk this season.
