Arsenal close to Chelsea, insists Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his side are not far behind the level of Premier League leaders Chelsea, the Daily Mail has reported.

The Gunners and the Blues drew 0-0 on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium, the result maintaining the 10-point gap between the sides, who each have five league games left to play.

Chelsea can take the title from current champions Manchester City with wins in their next two games – against Leicester City in midweek and Crystal Palace at the weekend but Wenger believes there isn’t a great deal between the sides despite Arsenal failing to beat Chelsea in either game of the season.

Wenger instead put the disparity between the two London clubs down to his team’s poor start, Arsenal struggling as Chelsea set the early pace at the top of the table and established a gap that hasn’t been reduced in the weeks since, despite a good Arsenal run and some indifferent Chelsea performances.

“You could see that (there is) not a lot (between the teams),” Wenger said. “We missed the first part of the season – after six games we had one win and Chelsea were already five or six points in front. That played a big part in the run-in.”

Arsenal proved unable to get past Chelsea despite having 57% of the ball and 11 shots to Chelsea’s seven, although Chelsea did record more shots on target – three to Arsenal’s one.
