Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is confident that his side can continue their fine form from before the international break when they take on Liverpool in a key game on Saturday, reports the club’s official
The FA Cup holders have been in fine form since New Year’s Day, recovering from an inconsistent first half of the season to win 10 of their last 11 Premier League games, the latest of which coming at Newcastle United on March 21.
Recent performances have seen manager Arsene Wenger and striker Olivier Giroud receive the Manager of the Month and Player of the Month awards respectively to March. The Gunners sit third in the Premier League table and have an outside chance of making a late title challenge, with victory in Saturday’s game likely to ensure a top-four finish.
Liverpool are the team fighting hard to chase down the sides currently in the Champions League qualification places, so Mertesacker is keen for his teammates to ensure they are on their game for this crucial encounter. “It’s a good break to switch off mentally but to find the form again and the rhythm is the next step after a couple of days’ break,” he said.
“It’s always a big battle. Let’s really focus on ourselves, continue our great run and, as we’ve done in recent years, ensure that we always finish strong. That gives yourself confidence and the respect from the other teams to do it again and again.”
