Arteta set to seal new Arsenal contract

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta is confident that he will sign a new contract soon after he makes his return from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Sky Sports has reported.

The Spaniard has not played since the end of November due to an ankle injury, and will sit out Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Reading at Wembley. However, he will be back in contention for the next Premier League game, at home to Chelsea on April 26 after playing 59 minutes for the Arsenal U-21 side recently.

Despite having several midfield options, manager Arsene Wenger is keen to keep hold of Arteta, who is expected to agree a one-year extension in the coming weeks. But the 33-year-old would like to be fully match-fit before committing his future to the North London club.

“My only aim is to get back fit and try to perform on the pitch,’ he said. ‘As long as I do that I am sure that I will continue with this club, with the relationship I have with the club and the respect I have from everybody here

“If I don’t do that then I am not going to be here because I don’t want to be somewhere where I cannot perform at my best and give what I think I can give. In May, when everything is fine, we will sit down and talk and it will take five minutes.”

Arteta has been at Arsenal since joining from Everton at the end of the 2011 summer transfer window and was named captain for this season. He helped them to win the FA Cup last season, and overall he has played 136 times for the club in all competitions, scoring 16 goals.
