Manchester United defender Chris Smalling signs a new deal with the club, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2019, with manager Louis van Gaal praising the 25-year-old for his improvement during his short time at the club, reports BBC
The former Fulham centre-back has been a reular in the United backline this season when fit, and has enjoyed a decent run of form. Smalling has divided opinion throughout the season, as many believe he should be doing a lot better at his age, while others think he’s performing well and can improve.
His manager, Louis van Gaal, certainly believes the latter, and was full of praise after the England international committed his future for another four years. The Dutch coach, who joined Manchester United this summer, talked up his defensive attributes, and believes him to be a key player in the side now.
With the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand gone, Smalling has become the leader at the back, and is performing well in the majority of games. He revealed his delighted to sign a new with the Red Devils, saying: “This is a very exciting time, we’re all determined to get back where we belong, at the highest level. I am so proud to play for such a great club. We have developed as a team over the course of the season under Louis van Gaal and we are now playing as a complete unit.”
Van Gaal also had some words of praise for the defender, saying: “He’s improved and developed immensely in the short time I have been at the club and become an integral part of the squad.”
