Barcelona defender Gerard Pique believes the Spanish giants can cope if midfielder Xavi leaves the club in the summer for Qatari side Al Sadd, reports Sky
Long-serving midfielder Xavi has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp this summer, with his poor form for Barcelona seeing him out of the starting eleven in favour of new-boy Ivan Rakitic. The summer signing has formed a formidable midfield trio with Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, and with Barcelona on course to win the La Liga title, into the Copa Del Rey final, and in the Champions League quarter-final this season, they are certainly coping with Xavi in the side so far.
The veteran deep-lying playmaker was reportedly given a tour of Al Sadd’s dacilities recently, but has tried to play down the specutlation, suggesting it was only a visit. But his club teammates have been preparing for his exit, and Pique believes the Catalans have enough quality in the side to ensure Xavi eventual exit doesn’t harm the club. He cited the departures of former legends, and how Barcelona managed to move on quickly, and is confident they can do it again post-Xavi.
“Barca are prepared for everything – the best players with the Ballon d’Or and the best coaches have left. (Carles) Puyol left, Pep (Guardiola) left, and it seemed that without them (Barcelona) would not be able to live. Life goes on. If Xavi leaves it will be an important absence, he is the emblem of the team and of La Masia (the club’s academy), but the team is going to continue.,” he said.
