Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes out-going Borussia Dortmund Coach Jurgen Klopp would be a good fit for the Premier League, BBC
It was this week announced that Klopp was to leave his post at the Bundesliga club this summer after seven years in charge, having twice won the German title, in 2010-11 and 2011-12, and reached the 2013 Champions League final, where they were beaten by Bayern Munich.
Klopp has been linked with a host of clubs – not least Mertesacker’s Gunners – and the World Cup winner has said Klopp would thrive in English football, and hopes to see him in the Premier League in the near future.
“His passion would fit and to see him in England would be very interesting,” Mertesacker said. “It would be nice if a German Coach would take the challenge of working in the Premier League.
“Everyone has their philosophy and Klopp has proved he’s top level and can teach a lot,” he went on. “It’s not so good for Dortmund that he’s leaving, but hopefully one day he will manage abroad.
“I’m curious what happened to him because he was an outstanding figure in the Bundesliga in the last couple of years and always a title contender. It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer.”
Klopp, who also landed the German Cup in 2011-12, was twice named the German manager of the year – in 2011 and 2012 – and in 2013 was second in the running for the FIFA Coach of the Year award, behind Jupp Heynckes, who led Bayern to victory over Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League.
