Man Utd lead Liverpool in chase for Burnley striker Ings

Manchester United are leading the race to sign Burnley striker Danny Ings when his contract expires at the end of the season, the Daily Mail has reported, surpassing Premier League rivals Liverpool.

United are said to have already held talks with the Clarets about Ings and both United and Liverpool are expected to try to agree a fee with Burnley lower than the potential £5m the forward would command if he moved as a free agent. Because of Ings’ age Burnley would receive sum as compensation.

Ings, who has also been linked with La Liga side Real Sociedad, managed by former Everton and United boss David Moyes, and Tottenham Hotspur, has scored nine goals in his first season in the Premier League and been touted for an England call-up. The Mail add that Ings caught the eye of United boss Louis van Gaal during Burnley’s 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford, having scored in the first-half to make the scores 1-1.

Chris Smalling had given United the lead and later scored a second to put them back in front, before Robin van Persie’s penalty sealed the points.
