Man Utd manager Louis van Gaal wants to finish above Man City

After Manchester United thrashed Manchester City at Old Trafford on the weekend, manager Louis van Gaal revealed his desperation for his side to finish higher than the Sky Blues in the Premier League this season, reports BBC Sport.

Manchester United’s recent win put them 3rd in the Premier League table, with six games left to play. The Red Devils finished the day four points clear of their fierce rivals, and in great shape to finish in the top-three. They have also earned one point more than the whole of last season. United next face Chelsea, who could be Man City’s last hope of ensuring they aren’t toppled in the table come May.

Van Gaal paid tribute to the supporters following their impressive victory, and revealed how important it is to finish above City in the table now they have opened up a healthy game at the business end of the season. The Dutch coach wants the Red Devils to get the job done in securing a Champions League place for next season, as they set out to do earlier in the campaign, and won’t be happy until it’s mathematically confirmed.

“We are now four points ahead of City for third place and that is very important. I am very proud and I’m very happy for the fans. It means a lot for the fans – all the players and staff wanted to give a victory to the fans. If anybody deserves it, it is the fans this season,” he said.
