Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker says the side are purely staying focused on their own job in pursuing Chelsea in the title race this season, as he feels their best form has come from not looking at any other side in the table, and staying focused on winning their own games, reports Sky
Arsenal are coming off the back of eight consecutive Premier League wins, and are the side closest to Chelsea in the table. The Gunners have to face Chelsea before the season comes to a close, and given the form Arsene Wenger’s side have been in, many are tipping them to finally get one over Jose Mourinho.
But Mertesacker doesn’t want the side looking at Chelsea, or any other sides below them in the table, as he feels they could be come distracted worrying about the form of others. The German international believes they overcame a poor start earlier in the season by focusing purely on their own game, and putting their energy on turning their situation around.
He feels this season’s Premier League title is Chelsea’s to lose, but does believe Arsenal stand a chance if they can win their remaining games, saying: “We have to win our games. But I think what made us really strong on our run is focusing on ourselves, not too much on Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United, just us. We’ll see how far we’ve come at the end. We depend on Chelsea so it’s not in our hands and it’s really hard to predict for us.”
“We need to deliver good performances and results and we didn’t manage that before. It’s really hard to say we have a chance. It’s more important we focus on us. That is what has made us really strong in the last couple of weeks.”
