Mourinho’s Premier League leaders travel to the Gunners’ Emirates Stadium this weekend with 10 points separating the first and second-placed sides. Fabregas, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona in the summer of 2014, previously spent eight years playing under Arsene Wenger, captaining the side and recording 57 goals in 303 games.
Fabregas was linked with a return to Arsenal before signing on with Chelsea and ahead of his first league game back at his old club – having played for Barca against Arsenal – Mourinho has spoken of Fabregas’ thought process in heading for Stamford Bridge.
“I know why he chose Chelsea,” Mourinho said. “I don’t know why he didn’t choose Arsenal. I only know what we promised him and what he promised us.
“I can’t talk about why he left Arsenal, why he didn’t go back,” the Portuguese continued. “I don’t know if it was his decision or the manager’s decision. We promised him a team built in the style to suit his play. Normally good projects go in hand with titles and he was looking for that.”
Fabregas has to date played 41 times under Mourinho, scoring five goals, having made 151 appearances for Barca, scored 57 goals, and won the league, cup and Club World Cup, among other trophies, after first being on Barca’s books as a youngster.
