Football pundit Alan Shearer, an ex-Newcastle striker and manager, believes his former side could be relegated this season following their woeful run of form in 2015, reports Sky
Newcastle were recently defeated 3-2 by Swansea City, which was their seventh consecutive loss in the Premier League. Manager John Carver blamed his players following the result, and believes the club’s fortunes are out of his hands if they can’t perform. But the reality of their situation is starting to become clear, as United move closer and closer to the drop zone.
They are just five points above the bottom-three with four games to go, and given they cannot arrest their slide at the tail-end of the season, Newcastle could well be dragged into a relegation battle at the death. The sides below the Magpies are starting to pick up points at a crucial time of the season, which puts big pressure on Newcastle.
United have picked up just one win since January, and Alan Shearer believes they are now in a fight for survival. He’s not convinced Newcastle can haul themselves out of trouble this season, and was quoted as saying: “I didn’t think so until Saturday but after that performance I can’t actually say with any certainty that we will get another point this season.”
“Manager John Carver has been getting some stick but he loves the club and I know he is hurting. Why don’t the Newcastle players start taking some responsibility because right now they are an embarrassment?”
