Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could be forced to move striker Wayne Rooney into a midfield role again this season, with the Red Devils suffering injuries in key areas ahead of their weekend clash against Chelsea, reports Sky
The England international has played a lot of games in midfield under Van Gaal this season, and could well have to cover the losses to Michael Carrick, Daley Blind, Phil Jones, all of whom could operate in the midfield this weekend. It comes at a bad time for the Red Devils, as they have been in great form in the Premier League ahead of their clash against the table-toppers Chelsea, but manager Louis van Gaal has a difficult decision to make.
Rooney has impressed for Manchester United since being back in the attack, so his influence higher up the pitch will be missed. Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie are both fit for the Dutch coach, so they could both play a part against the Blues. Following the news of having so many players out of action for such an important league game, Van Gaal made no secret of his frustration.
“It is the worst scenario. Marcos and Phil can both play left central defender and Jonny Evans is also suspended so I do not have many choices. Daley Blind and Michael Carrick could play as a holding midfield player and I don’t have another option, or I have to play Wayne Rooney again in that position. It is a puzzle,” he said.
