Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood hailed Fabian Delph as ‘the best midfielder in the Premier League’ after he helped his side to a crucial victory over mid-table Everton, Sky
The West Midlands club were on top for most of the first half and established a 2-0 lead at the break thanks to in-form leading scorer Christian Benteke, who first got in between two Everton defenders to head home from a hanging left-wing cross, before turning home at the far post from a corner.
The visitors pulled one back from the penalty spot shortly after half-time as Romelu Lukaku converted following a clumsy foul by Ron Vlaar on Steven Naismith, but Villa got an all-important third as Tom Cleverley raced on to Leandro Bacuna’s sublime pass to beat Tim Howard with a powerful shot.
Phil Jagielka’s late header ensured a nervy finish, but Villa held on to continue their fine form under Sherwood, who singled out the hardworking Delph for praise post-match. He said: “I’m not going to go over the top here, but there isn’t a better midfield player in the country than Fabian Delph at the moment.
“He’s got everything, he breaks the game up, he’s got trickery, he bursts through with the ball. He has everything to his game, and he can score. He leaves nothing on the field. It’s not only about energy and desire, it’s about flair and imagination, he’s got the whole package. He’s a warrior, there isn’t a lot he can’t do.’
