Di Maria’s first season a disappointment, claims van Gaal

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has described record signing Angel Di Maria’s first season at the club as a ‘disappointment’, Sky Sports has reported.

There were very high hopes for Di Maria when he joined Man Utd for £59.7m from Real Madrid towards the end of last summer’s transfer window in the most expensive and most high-profile deal by a Premier League club in 2014.

He began well and helped the Red Devils move up the table following a slow start, but has recently found himself out of the team, failing to start since the FA Cup defeat at home to Arsenal in early March.

The Argentine, who helped his country to the World Cup final last year, has scored only three goals since moving to Old Trafford, and as a result of his recent disappointments has been linked with a summer move to French champions Paris St. Germain.

And although van Gaal has dismissed those rumours, he has admitted that Di Maria could have done much better for United so far. ‘He cannot say that he has had a marvellous season here,” said the 63-year-old.

“Normally Di Maria should have played, but the last weeks he doesn’t play anymore and the team is winning. Now, we are losing, so the chance of him coming back is higher. It is always like that. It is never that it is not like that. The issue that he is not always in the line-up is for him a disappointment, but also for me a disappointment.”
