Wilshere a long way from hitting top form, admits Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that midfielder Jack Wilshere needs a prolonged period without sustaining an injury before he is able to return to his best form, writes BBC Sport.

The 23-year-old has not featured for the first team since November, when he was forced off with an ankle problem during the 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United. The injury required surgery and has plagued him ever since, with his return delayed by two months after needing two pins removed from his leg in February.

He could make his long-awaited return on Monday at Hull City, having been an unused substitute in Arsenal’s goalless draw with leaders Chelsea last time out, but Wenger is concerned that it may take some considerable time before the England man can consistently be at his best for the Gunners.

“He needs one or two years without problems to get the full confidence and belief back,’ said Wenger, who has witnessed Wilshere suffering a series of ankle injuries throughout his career, which have prevented him from adding to his total of 148 appearances for the club in all competitions.
