QPR vs Newcastle – Premier League preview and team news

Newcastle United make the trip to West London to face relegated Queens Park Rangers as they look to avoid joining the hosts in the Championship for next season.

Before the turn of the year, QPR were showing real signs that they could survive this time around, thanks to an increasingly strong home record. However, they have not won at Loftus Road in 2015, and despite a brief upturn in performance levels of late, it has resulted in a slide that boss Chris Ramsey has been unable to halt.

Indeed, their relegation was confirmed in embarrassing fashion last time out as they were trounced by Manchester City. From the moment the opening goal went in it looked like Rangers would be on the receiving end of a rout, and this encounter may be the last home outing for several players in a Hoops shirt.

There is much more riding on this one for Newcastle, who finally ended their demoralising losing streak with a draw at home to West Bromwich Albion, a display which earned great praise from boss John Carver. An Ayoze Perez goal brought relief right across an anxious St. James’ Park.

The team is still lacking in confidence and evidently in quality, but victory here could ensure Premier League survival depending on what 18th-placed Hull City do at Tottenham. The Magpies have experience of doing so, having sealed safety by winning this fixture in 2013.

Bobby Zamora is doubtful for QPR, who are also waiting on the fitness of Mauricio Isla and Armand Traore. Midfielders Alejandro Faurlin and Sandro are definitely out.

Top scorer Papiss Cisse could be handed a start by Newcastle, who welcome back Darryl Janmaat after suspension but are without Mike Williamson, who completes a two-match ban.
