Aston Villa and Southampton are thought to be battling it out for the signature of Juventus centre-back Angelo Ogbonna, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
The 27-year-old has failed to establish himself as a first team regular with the Serie A champions, and is expected to move on this summer in a bid to get his career back on track.
Serie A returnees Bologna were believed to have been given permission to open talks with the Italian international, but he is now said to be keen on testing himself elsewhere in Europe, with both Villa and Southampton showing the most interest.
Villa are in the hunt for a new centre-back as they face losing former skipper Ron Vlaar, whose contract with the club expires at the end of the month.
And though they have recently brought in Micah Richards, who can feature in the middle, the club’s injury problems in defensive areas last term have prompted Tim Sherwood to continue searching for reinforcements.
