Chelsea have apparently been told by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid that they can seal the inevitable signing of France international forward Antoine Griezmann if they make an ‘extraordinary’ offer for his services, according to respected journalist Graham Hunter (via the Metro).
The Blues have emerged as frontrunners to snap up the 24-year-old this summer, but Aletico are understandably reluctant to allow him to leave just 12 months after bringing in from fellow La Liga side Real Sociedad.
He impressed during his first season in the capital, clocking up 22 goals in 37 appearances in the league, but couldn’t help the side from relinquishing their title to Barcelona.
However, Hunter believes that Atletico’s financial woes has their hands tied, leaving them with little choice but to sell should a large offer come their way.
Antoine Griezmann is exceptional and would set the Premier League alight,’ said Hunter.
“This is a really talented, quick and robust young footballer. The price will have to be extraordinary because neither Simeone or Atletico want to let him go,” Hunter said.
“Chelsea have the power to buy him though. If they go all-in they have the power to take him from a club which is more than €500m in debt and trying to pay for a new stadium.
“Griezmann is not pushing to get out, but the fact remains the economic power at Chelsea is such that, if they want him, they can prise him away.
“Atletico have already signed two big strikers [Luciano Vietto and Jackson Martinez] maybe they are preparing for the inevitable?”
Able to play either through the centre or out wide, his arrival would give Jose Mourinho some fresh options going forward.
