Arsenal are reportedly set to get two of their most important pieces of potential summer business done and dusted this week, as Theo Walcott edges closer to signing a new contract, while Petr Cech’s proposed move from Chelsea nears completion.
Arsenal Transfer News
The Daily Mail report that Arsene Wenger had previously been sceptical about the possibility of completing a deal for the Blues stopper, due to his importance to Jose Mourinho’s side and their reluctance to sell him to a rival, however it now appears that the Premier League champions will be willing to let him move across London.
The Stamford Bridge outfit are reportedly looking for around £11m for the 33-year-old, and, with Paris Saint-Germain lurking in the background, it seems ill-advised for the Gunners to try and negotiate for an even greater bargain.
Although Cech lost his place to Thibaut Courtois this year, he has remained one of the very best keepers in the top flight, and has proven just that whenever he has been given an opportunity. If Arsenal can secure his signature, it would be a massive step in the right direction as they attempt to build on the success of last year, and hopefully challenge Chelsea for the title.
Meanwhile, one man who looks set to extend his stay at the Emirates is Theo Walcott. The England international’s contract expires at the end of next season, the Mail report, but it appears that talks over a new deal seem to have started to reach a conclusion, according to the same newspaper.
The Mail suggest that his desire for playing time was crucial to any resolution. And his case for a larger role in the side would have been helped hugely by his performances late on in the campaign. Starting as a striker, the 26-year-old bagged a hat-trick against West Brom on the final day of the season. And he would further stake his claim by opening the scoring in the FA Cup final win over Aston Villa.
