Five best Arsenal signings under Arsene Wenger as Petr Cech completes Emirates switch

2. Patrick Vieira

Patrick Vieira was one of the first signings that Arsene Wenger made when he moved to England in 1996. BBC Sport report that the then 20-year-old moved for £3.5m, which would have represented a huge risk given the Frenchman’s inability to hold down a first-team place in AC Milan’s side. However, to say the risk paid off would be a massive understatement.

The tough-tackling centre midfielder was arguably never given enough credit for his ability on the ball. Having the likes of Dennis Bergkamp around him however, meant that his role in the side was often to win the ball back and release it to one of the many creative sparks in the team.

He was part of two double-winning sides during his time at Highbury, and would be the captain by the time the team went the whole of the 2003/04 season unbeaten in the Premier League.
