When Arsenal broke their record transfer fee in 1999 on a player that had struggled to make the Juventus side (via BBC Sport), few could have imagined quite how successful a signing Thierry Henry would prove to be. The doubt over whether he could justify the £11m fee grew when he went eight games without finding the back of the net. However, he would prove anyone who dared to doubt him completely wrong as he would go on to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Unfortunately for all strikers since his departure in 2007, he has become the yardstick that all forwards must measure up to. Unsurprisingly, no one has, yet.
