The Brazilian international tested positive for a substance called Hydrochlorothiazide, which is designed to flush water out of your system quicker.

Though Hydrochlorothiazide is not classed as a performance enhancing drug, but it can be used as a mask for other performance-enhancing drugs, and has been deemed by the World Anti-Doping Agency as a “specified substance”.

ESPN Brazil claim that the 32-year-old was initially found to have the substance in his system back in February, but asked for a B sample, which was provided last month.

After failing that, he was then hit with a suspension by the Sports Justice Tribunal of Sao Paulo.

However, Santos’ lawyer, Antonio Carlos de Azevedo, is claiming that there may have been an accidental contamination. It is not yet known whether they will appeal the ban.
