Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister has backed James Milner to shine at Anfield next season, after the former Manchester City joined the Reds on a free.
According to the Daily Star, McAllister believes that the versatility that Milner offers will be a valuable asset for Brendan Rodgers to have.
“He’s a quality player, he can play in three or four different positions and he’s a very, very experienced international footballer,” he explained.
“There is good experience within the Liverpool team but adding someone like Milner, who has played at World Cups, played at European Championships, he’ll be able to go and cope with the atmosphere at Anfield,” he added.
The former Leeds youngster will be hoping that he can enjoy a similar spell at Anfield to the one McAllister had. While the Scottish international had undeniable class throughout his career, he was 35 when Gerard Houllier brought him in from Coventry City, which led some Reds fans to question the decision.
Nevertheless, the midfielder shone during his two-year spell. In his first season, his audacious free-kick in stoppage time sealed the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, and the campaign would end with the side clinching a treble consisting of the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup, with McAllister playing a key role in each run.
And after a difficult year that saw Rodgers’ men fall out of the Premier League’s top four, and conclude their campaign with a hammering at Stoke, Liverpool will be hoping that their new signing can inspire them to the level of success that McAllister did 14 years ago.
