Everton frontman Romelu Lukaku has emerged as a surprise target for Manchester United this summer as a possible replacement for Robin van Persie, according to the Daily
The Belgian international made the permanent switch to Goodison Park from Chelsea last summer in a £28m deal, and immediately set about repaying the fee the Toffees paid by smashing in 20 goals during his debut campaign.
And United chief Louis van Gaal has earmarked the 22-year-old as a possible alternative should a move for any of his primary targets fail to come about.
Recently, United have been linked with big money moves for the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Edinson Cavani and Gareth Bale, but they all look as though they will fall by the wayside at various stages in the coming weeks.
Lukaku won’t come cheap, though, but Van Gaal has been promised a significant transfer kitty for the upcoming window.
And while Everton would be reluctant to sell, if an offer that proved too good to turn down arrived they could very well be persuaded to part with him.
