Liverpool are plotting a bid to be a thorn in Manchester United’s side once again by beating them to the signature of Benfica playmaker Nico Gaitan, according to the Metro.
The player’s agent hinted on Thursday that a deal to take the Argentine international to Old Trafford, but the Reds haven’t given up hope of stealing him away from under their rival’s nose.
Brendan Rodgers is reported to have been a long standing fan of Gaitan, and should he manage to pull off a deal to sign him it would almost guarantee Raheem Sterling’s departure from Anfield.
Fellow Premier League giants Arsenal are also said to be keen on landing Gaitan, but reports in the Daily Star suggest they have interested elsewhere, and don’t want to be drawn into a bidding war for the player.
Gaitan is said to have a release clause value if £25m in his contract, and Liverpool could consider matching it in the coming days.
