Louis van Gaal has decided who he wishes to be Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper next season, should David de Gea get his move to Real Madrid.
According to the Daily Star, the Dutchman has previously wanted both Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Asmir Begovic of Stoke City to replace the Bernabeu-bound keeper. However, the Star report that the Spurs man would cost at least £30m, while the Bosnian is heading to Chelsea, forcing him to stick with current back up stopper Victor Valdes.
The Spaniard completed a move to Old Trafford in January, but was kept on the bench for the majority of the campaign with his compatriot in such inspired form. He made his debut in the penultimate game of the season, when de Gea sustained an injury against Arsenal. That same injury kept him out of the final game against Hull.
The 33-year-old received plenty of plaudits for his performance at the KC Stadium, and made one particular save that made an important statement to his manager about his credentials.
However, Valdes may yet return to what had become his regular seat on the bench, as the Star report that talks over de Gea’s proposed move have stalled.
