Representatives from the two sides met at the Premier League’s AGM in Harrogate on Thursday, where City made it clear to their rivals that they want to take the 20-year-old off their hands.

Liverpool are apparently reluctantly ready to let the contract rebel leave, but only if their £50m valuation is met, and City are prepared to pay it in order to see off neighbours Manchester United in the race for his signature.

United also made their interest in his services known this week, but haven’t been as aggressive as City in their pursuit.

City lost midfielder James Milner to Liverpool on Thursday, and the club are now desperate to add to their already dwindling English contingent in order to meet their homegrown quota.

Although he still has two-years remaining on his present deal, Sterling recently rejected a new £100,000-per-week offer from the Reds to stick around.
