According to the Daily Mail, the move is also motivated by City’s desire to boost their number of homegrown players, having watched both James Milner and Frank Lampard leave the club this summer.

However, Kit Symons is keen to hold onto the winger, with the Mail reporting that the Championship side have offered him a new contract worth around £5,000 a week. They believe that they can convince him that he would be better off staying put, and is in danger of watching his career take several steps back – just as it did for Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell most notably – should he decide to move to the Etihad.

Roberts – who has played regularly at various England youth levels – is part of an exciting group of players coming through at Craven Cottage that have been tasked with helping rebuild the side after their relegation from the Premier League in 2014.

Nevertheless, the fear of falling further down the pyramid, which loomed over their heads for much of the campaign, meant that the youngsters were used relatively sparingly until safety looked assured. Roberts himself found opportunities at a premium, making 17 appearances, but only two starts, thus suggesting that he is not ready to make the step up to the Premier League just yet.
